Color Impressions

9x12

I drove around looking for inspiration in Waxahachie. I spotted this display of potted plants. The bright textured pots and contrasting flowers caught my eye. I wanted to get the homeowners permission to paint their lovely display. I could hear music coming from the back yard and tracked down Jacob. He was up on a ladder preparing to paint the house. He was gracious and allowed me to set up in his front yard and paint away.

This painting is display at the Ellis County Art Association during the 16th Annual Paint Historic Waxahachie. Reception is May 19th and the show will hang until the end of July. They are located at 113 W. Franklin Street, Waxahachie, Texas. Located on the Historic town square.

Children's Garden

Children's Garden 16x20 oil on linen

I created this at the Master's garden in Granbury recently. I was thrilled to find the poppies and other spring flowers blooming.  I set up in front of the children's garden's with a great view of the poppies! It was a breezy day and a challenge to paint on the larger canvas.

This painting is in the plein-air group show with Lake Granbury Art Association. It's on view until June 30th at the Shanley House. Available for purchase.

My theme for Christmas cards this year was blue birds. I have painted a few over the years and this is one that is still available.

Fall Festival of Flowers

Fall Festival of Flowers

7x14 oil on canvas

I painted this on my patio recently. When I started it, the plants were all in the shade. I focused on the shapes and colors. By the time I was an hour into it, the sun popped out and produced strong shadows and light. That is the best part of plein air painting. Things change moment by moment creating spontaneous opportunities.

On the Sunny Side

After visiting the gorgeous fields of sunflowers I was inspired to paint them in a larger format. I worked on an older painting that was in the portrait style. It was of large sunflowers and painted in my garden. Painted with a palette knife in many layers.

Chasing Sunflowers

Chasing Sunflowers

11x14 oil on wood panel

Chasing Sunflowers was a plein air piece I started in a beautiful field of sunflowers.

We set up quickly and got to work. As soon as we started the owner showed up and asked us to leave. He did say we could finish, so we worked quickly. When I got home it looked like a hot mess. So I scraped the painting and started over! The landscape around this field was so beautiful. I was determined to make this one work.

Painted Meadow Demo

Painted Meadow Demo

14x11 Oil on wood panel

I created this as a demo for the Lake Granbury Art Association. I used my plein air sketch, a preliminary drawing and photo to create this. I discussed plein air painting and the use of the palette knife. I changed the format from landscape to portrait. It was a fun night with a great group of artist.

I have plans to do a painting demo at the Lake Granbury Art Association on Monday, May 10th. I will be demonstrating my palette knife process and talking about plein air painting. There is also a workshop coming up on Saturday, May 15th 9-4. Let me know if you would be interested in either and I can provide more info.

The indian paint brush and queen annes lace were a sight I found at Hunter's Park on Lake Granbury. I was so excited to find this combo I returned the next day with paints in hand. This was a quick study and will provide my inspiration for the demo.

Jim

Jim

10 x8 oil on canvas panel

This is a 2 hour painting I did at our drawing group. We meet up at the Shanley House with Lake Granbury Art Association once a week. Models normally sit for 20 minute sessions, 10 minute breaks for 3 hours. This was Jim's first time to model for us. He stated it was very relaxing and a good experience. We are always looking for volunteers!

Hidden in The Hollyhocks

Hidden in the Hollyhocks

20x10 oil on canvas

This was inspired from a trip to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. I created it with a palette knife applying the paint in small squares. I focused on softer edges and colors.

Thank you to a new collector and Dutch Art Gallery for sending this one off to a new home. This was a gift for a long lost loved one. They connected and she brought gifts of geraniums. This painting will remind them of that first meeting.

I love it when a painting connects to someone in a meaningful way. They sent this photo to share.

Hats off to Pam and Nick at Dutch Art Gallery for providing a beautiful frame and service.

Poppy Fields Forever

Poppies Field Forever

11x14 oil on canvas

For a lover of color, its was a thrill to see the colorful landscape filled with poppies. This is inspired from the wildflower seed farm in Fredericksburg, Texas. The wild flowers were popping with color in the morning sun.

There is nothing better than seeing a field of wildflowers. In certain locations the fields of blue bonnets seems to go on forever. Getting up close and taking in the fragrance of the wild flowers is an added bonus.

Blue Front

Blue Front  20x16 oil on canvas

This is a house I walk by in my neighborhood. I loved the light and colorful trim and have thought about painting it for a while. I took artistic liberty and planted this garden out front. It is filled with texture and eye popping colors.

Lake Granbury In View

Lake Granbury in View

11x14 acrylic on canvas

I'm always delighted to get a peek of the lake from a different view. This is a from a spot just outside of the Acton Nature Center. For an added challenge I painted this with acrylic on canvas. Changing mediums is a wonderful way to bring a fresh approach to the creative process.
