Prairie Delight

Meeting up with friends to paint is a highlight for my week. The Acton Nature provides a delightful location for us. There is a display of fall grasses and the plant, snow on the prairie blooming now. The view is a combination of complimentary colors. There were pops of purples against the glow of the golden grasses. The stalk of the plant is a combination of bright red, oranges and yellows.

Snowy Tops

Roche’s Point Lighthouse

I had the pleasure of painting this iconic lighthouse as a commission. My sister took a cruse through the British Isles and requested a painting for her travel mate.
This is located in entrance to Cork Harbour, Whitegate, County Cork, Ireland. Originally constructed in 1817.
This painting has sold, but I am always open discussing a commission to recreate lasting memorise.

Seeing pelicans on the lake is a real treat. We were on Lake Granbury and had witnessed them flying over the house. They are known to winter here so we took the boat out and found a pod of them.

Zinnia Feeding

It is so calming to set in the garden and watch the birds feed on the blooming flowers. The hummingbirds are a regular and fun to capture on canvas. Painted with texture and soft soothing colors in the alla prima fashion. Painting wet on wet is another term for painting in one session.

Big Texas Sky

I was drawn to this dramatic sky and knew for a long time I would paint it. I find the changing cloud formation almost abstract and an endless source of inspiration. Our friend Doug, went out before and took photos of the changing landscape. The cluster of hot pink Desert Indian paint brush stood out and needed to be painted.

Victorian Garden

I was invited to participate in the Secret Garden Tour in Weatherford. This was sponsored by the Chandor Gardens. The house I was assigned to was a charming Victorian home with a large porch, gingerbread trim and white picked fencing. The garden featured pops of color everywhere. I was thrilled when the homeowner’s children joined me with their paints and easels. It was a fun day with a steady stream of visitors.
I was thrilled to sell this painting right off the easel. The person that purchased it, was on the phone with her friend, that grew up in this house. She bought it for her.

Spring’s Red Fling

Meeting friends to painted on location at Benbrook Lake is a highlight of the week for me. It is a delight to see the ever changing landscape. The greens were bright in the morning light and the flowers glowed. This is the second painting I started that morning. You may wonder how I can do this so quickly. It is because I come prepared. I pre-mix my colors before I leave the studio. I also prep my canvas with a warm tone. The third element I love, is to have a colorful landscape to create from.

Dazzling Display

This was painted on location at Benbrook Lake. It’s a familiar spot and one we frequently go to. Especially in the spring time when the meadow to the lake is filled with beautiful blankets of color. The star of the day was the gaillardia flower, also know as Indian Blanket. We were warned by Doug to bring our cadmium red light and that was all I saw.

Hunter’s View

I met a couple of friends to paint at Hunter Park on Lake Granbury. The weather has been hit or miss and recently. Saturday was a big hit and the pick day of the week. I have painted here many times and felt the familiarity with the location and that made the process freer and more intuitive. The location was lovely, with hints of wild flowers and golden grasses.

Natural Design

I met up with friends at Benbrook Lake on Tuesday morning. The forecast called for a sunny day, but when I arrived it was very much gray and cloudy. The gray overcast skies makes the colors sing. Halfway through painting this, the sun broke through the clouds and changed the shadows and color. I was attracted to this natural ditch filled with an array of wildflowers.
We wrapped this up and went to Doug’s house for lunch in the garden. Lunch was followed by a critique session. It is helpful to get feedback and suggestions for improvement.
