Holiday Park Wildflowers

I met up with my artist friends to paint at Holiday Park on Benbrook Lake yesterday. The hills and surrounding landscape are dotted with wildflowers. There are still some blue bonnets with the reds and yellows starting to show. It really is a beautiful area this time of the year. I wanted to show the hazy light we were dealing with on this painting.

Prancing Poppies

I was deep in thought painting this at Lake Granbury’s Master Gardens center when my friend, Claudia came up me. She wanted to view what I was working on. She said “do you mind if i make a suggestion? STOP where you are. So here it is, finished or not. Sometimes it takes two artist to create a painting.

Blue Immersion

12x9 oil on canvas

I found my joy painting on the banks of Benbrook Lake this week. It was a view of bluebonnets and the distance lake in my vision. This was my second painting created on location. I start with a warm, thin wash and premix my paints before I leave the house. I begin with a one inch brush and and map out my design. Once this is set, I grab my palette knife and block in my colors. It becomes totally spontaneous at this point. Fun times painting with friends.

Blue Inspired Landscape

Mellow Yellow

This is the second painting I created while visiting Acton Nature Center. The colors are starting to pop and show out. Image the excitement I felt when I spotted this field of yellow spring flowers gracing the landscape. The birds were singing, rabbits hopping around and happy artist scattered about capturing nature’s beauty.

Nature’s Reveal

I painted this at the Nature Center in Acton yesterday.  The wildflowers are slowly revealing their brilliant color. It was good to get outside with friends and paint..The weather has been incredible lately. Get out and enjoy it! There is nothing better than seeing a field of wildflowers. In certain locations the fields of blue bonnets seems to go on forever. Getting up close and taking in the fragrance of the wild flowers is an added bonus.

Spring’s Wild Garden

Lily Life

My wonderful husband knows I love to receive flowers on Valentines Day. He is fateful in this annual tradition. This is a still life from a past Valentine’s Day arrangement. I started a still life series working in acrylics last year. It was a fun challenge.

Saucer Magnolia Light

Are you always eager to see the first sign of spring? I know I am and always on the look out.

Seeing the saucer magnolia blooms indicate warmer days are ahead. This tree was at the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens and always a bloom this time of the year.

Sun Dappled Azaleas 16x20 oil on canvas

We attended a wedding in the Japanese Gardens in Ft. Worth. We arrived just as the sun was setting and casting a golden light on everything. This was in early March, so a lot of the spring bushes were in bloom. It was a magical walk through the gardens to join the wedding party.

I created this from my Valentine's Day gift of flowers from my husband.  I staged the scene in the sun near my patio.  The little blue bird balanced out the warm colors and added a great interest.

Winter Roses

I shared the process of Winter Roses on social media and feel the calming effect painting has on me. It is so satisfying to develop a painting and see the results. I plucked these beauties out of my garden before the winter vortex and cold temperatures set in. When I paint from life I feel a sense of urgency. It’s a time to observe, document and executive a pleasing visual combination.

Pod of Pelicans

Why paint pelicans? This painting was inspired from our annual visitors. It is so exciting to see these giant birds on the lake in the winter time. We were lucky to find a pod of the pelicans gathered and fishing last year. I knew I wanted to share the story of what an inspiration and joy it was see them returning to the area.

Striking Autumn Light

I am constantly on the lookout for interesting shapes and color. I study light and patterns the shadows makes. The image for this painting was filled the elements I like to include in painting. This was inspired from a walk through a neighborhood near work. It has strong darks and the bright lights of a North Texas Fall. Using brushes and palette knife, I carved out texture and color. It was a joy to create.

Flying Saucers

The saucer magnolia trees are one of the first bright spots of color in the waning days of winter. It’s also known as a tulip tree. You can sight the blooms in early February thru April. This was spotted at the Ft. Worth Botanical Garden.

Autumn Gold

This is my first painting finished this year. I started this painting in early December. The trees were brilliant shades of red, oranges and gold. Depending on the weather the fall colors can extend until Christmas. I got all caught up with the activities of the holiday and had to set it aside. Getting back to the studio and a routine feels great.
