Dynamic Morning Display

Exploring this rich color combination was exciting.  This intense color in the sky only happens for a brief moment and quickly changes. I used the palette knife to blend the paint together and then to add layers of colorful paint. The texture adds dimension and movement to guide the eye around.

Iris Garden in Bloom 20x24 oil on canvas

I get excited with I see iris flowers in bloom.  Their delicate colors and petals remind me of my Mother- in-law. She had a large garden of iris of every color.  They lined her front yard and were beautiful.  My inspiration for this was from painting at the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens in the spring time.

Quince Impression  8x10 oil on canvas

This started as a plein air painting from the Ft Worth Botanical Gardens in late winter.  I dug it out and decided to slapped more paint on it.  I added more texture with the palette knife. I'm always surprised at the shapes and color you can build up with the knife.  I think I will stop for now and enjoy it's soft colors and lovely design.

Fascinating Formation 9x12 oil on wood panel

This dramatic sky was screaming paint me, paint me. I find the abstract shapes of the clouds an endless source of inspiration.  I created this on a smooth wood surface, which seemed to soak up the paint. This has many layers of color painted applied with a palette knife.

Blue Front Moving In

The moment I saw this cloud formation, I knew I would attempt to paint it. The back lit clouds were a challenge to interpret. I used a phthalo blue and ultramarine blue to capture the moody blue morning. I don't think I finished with this color combination. I just love it.

I created this from a couple of field studies and a photos from El Tesoro.  El Tesoro is a camp for kids in the Granbury Area. A lovely river runs through it with colorful views.  A group of plein air painters were granted access.  We hung out, painted and enjoyed the solitude of this camp.

This was inspired from small study I did recently. I like to work out the color and design before I go large.  The landscape is from Lake Granbury.  It is always a pleasure to go out on the lake in the boat and watch the setting sun.  We don't have to go far to find stunning views like this one.

I loved painting this and adding my own color scheme to the landscape.  My challenge is to take a simple landscape photo and enhance it. Adding the glowing colors of a beautiful sunset made this landscape pop.

This is another fabulous sunrise I witnessed on my journey to Ft Worth.  I can always find inspiration when the sky lights up like this.  I used a palette knife to blend the colors together.  Building one layer over the other, it is filled with texture.

Light Filled Sunrise  12x16 oil on canvas

The sky was a wonderful mix of cool and warm colors.  I started with a thin layer of thalo red rose and built up the texture and color from there.  The view is along a walking path in Pecan Valley Park, Benbrook, Texas.  The sunrise views from here are a constant inspiration for me.
